Week one reflections and thoughts
Dear Students, I hope you all enjoyed week 1 of our course. At first I thought maybe there would be too many students to do a blog (probably over 40 when all is done, with new entries) but then I thought that we should try it; so we all get a chance to interact and see each other's thoughts and ideas. So this is where I will ask you to place your reflections and questions, rather than e-mailing them to me. You can simply place them on here each week as we go. Write your reflection paragraph and then three applications as a comment. Be sure to include your name. Of course you can still e-mail or phone if you wish if you have questions that may need a personal answer or you just want to discuss something privately.

Just checking to make sure you can comment ok, Andy
And now also checking to make sure you can post anonymously as well, without opening an account, if you want (but be sure to write name so I know who it is!) Andy
it is nice to have such a blog like this, hope it will help us alot.
First impression set it all in the classroom. I found that our first meeting was very informative. Dr. Andy gave us in detail of what’s expected of us for the course. As I reflected on our first class, I like what he said about meeting students where they are and guide them to go forward. It’s like a family. What I always expected of the university level professor is to deliver formal lectures. Whereas, students expected to digest it and do what’s expected of them. This type of style is very intense. Students learning might not be as effective because it’s only came from the brain and not from the heart. Students do not have much saying in it. It’s always crucial for a classroom teacher to create an interpersonal learning environment right at the beginning of the year. I believe what it’s called the whole approach learning style. That’s what we need to do in our real life classroom as well. Be able to be flexible. The blackout today I believe had serve its’ purpose. It is a good example of a positive learning experience. Everybody stayed calm. Even though in the dark, learning was also taken place where students get acquainted to each other and have sometimes to reflect on what we’ve talked about.
I like the class blog idea. Thanks to those who have suggested it. It is a great learning tool in education. This will keep our class learning in action.
Three Applications:
1. Confirm what I try to do in the classroom. Meeting students where they are by dividing my classroom up into different Center, using the Montessori ‘s approach. (work independently and move forward.
2. In my classroom, there are many different kind of learning style. I like to use Garderner (Multiple Intelligence). It’s important that I use different ways to reach them all. For example: kinesethic—for students that like to use their body or play a song for the class prayer service
3. Create a learning environment: I think this is the foundation for both teacher and students to set a mood for learning. I need to spend more time to prepare my lesson and setting up the classroom/ tidy up after each session for the next class. I put on soft instrument music while students are working, walk around make observation in order to check for students understanding. Be available to assist students. --Sr. Rose
What a positive and empowering series of insights this is Sister Rose! The part about using mood music to set the tone for a class is a good reminder to all of us about finding varied ways to reach students. Thanks
just checking
reflection no.1
Yaowalak G.
As i'm the director of my art school.i am very much focus on hire the qualifired art teachers. they should be able to take care of classes and transfer all arts knowledge to the students.
Applications,
1.Can build up students creativities, art skill.
2.Can motivate them on their art works.
3. Can guide them how to beheive in class
The first class was as expected quite informative in terms of the requirements for the class. However, with the sudden black out I learnt the importance of flexibility and the spontaneity. The situation in the classroom was handled without much difficulty by Dr. Andy. But the situation is a bit different when you deal with primary and elementary students. Even a black out during the day creates a lot of excitement and they start looking around and thinking about how hot the classroom is and how difficult it is to read. You cannot expect them to sit quietly and concentrate for very long because they are distracted. Thus, the teacher at this moment is required to switch to something beyond the textbook to engross the students.
Applications
1. Story Telling: Students at this age love stories, the use of story telling can work very well in this situation.
2. Outdoor activities: Since the students are already excited it is the best to take them out to look at the flowers in the garden or out to the gymnasium to do some stretches.
3. Playing Games: Playing classroom interactive games like fruit salad, categories or even games to check student’s spellings.
My first reflection will be in the classroom. I have known many foreigners in the classroom that difference in my Bachelor degree. In my Bachelor degree, there are many Thai students in the classroom. And Dr.Andy told us what should we do in the future as an outline of this course.
Applications
- Preparing before the class begin is very importance that can make me understand more about the content.
- Students can open mind to speak if they have a question or giving advise whenever they want.
- Hard reading is requirement for this course :P
Pakorn S.
The first class was impressive me as a fresh start and it really boosted my ideal. Dr.Andy encouraged students to define the goals that we like to achieve through this course. I think I will explore how the content of applying for my educational management field which I had learnt a real sense of achievement in the first class.
Applications:
1.I can observe children and teacher in routine, determining in advance, planning sessions or through consultation. I will observe using "the foundation stage record" as the framework because these observation will help staff and parents determine whether child can or can't particular tasks, and what end results has been achieved.
2.I can use an "open-style of smiling" to welcome new family of visiting the school by using in positive thinking ways of trusting in God.
3.I can use a moral to keep in mind that all staffs are here to help each other, and it is by working together that thing will get done. Sometime Committee members may be asked to help with tasks that may prove to be too much for staffs.
Ms.Rossakorn Jittasevee -wrote.
My first impression, when I entered, I saw a lot of students including new and old students. I did not expect that much. I was happy to meet new friends. Another point was that Dr. Andy gave a lot of supportive information. So far, I did not get all what he had talked, I got to understand from the documents that he sent. I really appreciate for Dr. Andy information and his good preparations.
Applications.
1. Students learn best when they are motivated by fun and good experiences. So, I, future teacher, must know how to motivate each students and well prepare myself.
2.To be a teacher is to help students. So, he or she must have a lot of essential knowledge before become teacher.
3.Sometimes teachers should teach auditory style, therefore Learners can be taught using sounds or music.

I would like re-submit my reflection for week one.
Really sorry for the first one.
The first class was quite informative in terms of the requirements for the class. Dr Andy gave us information of what is expected from us during the course. As I reflected on our first class, I like the way he made the class more passive and not only concentrate on the content but also gave us an opportunity to work on projects and be more creative in our field. It’s always difficult for a classroom teacher to create an environment in which students feel comfortable in asking questions or seeking guidance. And I feel that Dr Andy has been able to show us how to do it effectively.
Three Applications:
1. I will try to do the same thing with my students. And by guiding them throughout the course.
2. Promote active learning techniques in the classroom.
3. Prepare yourself before class so that you are able to convey the important information to the students when they need.
@Yaowalak teacher qualifications are often overlooked but critical to educational quality.
@Reshmi, sure, a blackout would be very different with elementary kids and working outside is a very positive solution.
@Pakorn, opening up good lines of communication is critical in any learning context.
@Rossakorn, its great to know you feel so upbeat about starting this course!
@Hnin, thanks for the kind feedback, don't be too worried if you do not understand everything, concentrating on key ideas will be enough.
@Manpreet, sure, the more active you can make the learning, the better!
As i reflected on my first class with Dr.Andy and all my new friends I personally find it very interesting. It was very informative regarding what was expected throughout the course. I liked how you encouraged us to participate in class and gave us the chance to ask questions. This made the learning environment very friendly and active. I'm really looking forward to this class and thanks to Dr.Andy for creating this blog, it keeps us all updated and in-touch with each other.
Application
- I would also love to create an environment where students are encouraged to participate in class once i start teaching.
- Giving the studends an outline of what is expected for the course from the first class is also very helpful so i would do the same.
- I would also make myself easily reachable when students needs help outside classroom.

Hello Dr. Andy! Sorry for the delayed submission of my reflection for Week 1. I was struggling today until my classmate Angena (the beautiful and kind Indian lady)send me a forwarded e-mail of the site. Thanks Angena! I'm quite visible now.
- Dr. Andy, it's a pleasure to have you as one of our instructors. You really came out with the thorough explanations of the Course Specification especially, the Teaching Plan. Thanks for the CD too! More power to you! I know that deep in your heart, you want us to learn so many things about this course and I do accept the challenge. Thanks in advance Sir!
Ms. Evangeline A. Concepcion (Ms. Evan)
@Neet and @ Ms. Evan, I truly appreciate your encouraging feedback and the upbeat nature of your reflections. Thanks!
In the first class of ED6007 on June 2, 2010 and it is the first class in Master Degree at here. We discussed about what we have to learn in the whole semester and all assignments.
Applications:
Sharing, I like the way you teach you always give, share and let students open their minds to ask and answer questions. And story-telling is a good way that I will use when I would like to explain to my class
Smile, It likes the first impression that I always use when I have a new class. I think it make positive thinking to all of us.
Preparing, Preparing before class is important, during the class is more and after the class is the most.I try to use your style as well organize class.
Phasupa W.
@Phasupa, it is encouraging to see you are finding direct applications fot these ideas, even at this early stage.
During the first week of ED 6007 class, Dr. Andy explained all the information for the whole semester. Furthermore, he created a new blog which is very significant for all students to share their reflection or comment what they have learnt from thier weekly lesson. As far as I am concerned, it is such a brilliant idea to have such a useful blog.
from Taipei airport...
@Dennis, thanks for the kind feedback. Regards, Andy
