Today was exactly what I really want to learn. Some of the helpful things we've talk about:
-as teachers we could also 'cheat a little bit' and assume that our students could do it. For me, why not, let's believe in positive thinking and not to look at broken things when it comes to our students, through this we would be able to discover some of the abilities/knowledge of each individual that we have in our class. Giving them a chance to grow and discover themselves in whatever they're good at.
*** "Teaching is a learned profession, anything can be learned"
- pick the key or the main ideas in the lesson- easy way to make them undersatnd the lesson/topic
- Process/Product- process (step by step) Product ( end result)
- Extraordinary teachers excel at creating exciting environments
-Extraordinary results-if you as a teacher knows how to connect with your students
-Ingredients of Passion- learning, field of study, be positive, teaching practices
**Key-bring in the average player and makes them outstanding

My Applications-
1)I'll give challenging, interesting and fun activities like drama, simulation, popular songs, etc.. For Role Play- applying the conversation they learned from the lesson. Let them imagine and put themselves in that given situation, as in conversation topics, for example "At the Restaurant". Let them act-out and video tape their presentation, actually, I'm already using this and I find it very effective. They love to see themselves on the screen acting and speaking in English. Also, one way of making them remember the conversation and somehow apply it in real life situations.
2)Creating a healthy classroom environment where they would feel valued and confident.
3) Being positive in whatever I do; I will try and try until I succeed!(Patience is also the key) I won't lose hope if some of my students are not catching up with my lessons, they just probably need a tap on the shoulder. I will somehow connect with them by giving them some activities/task which they are good at.I'll need to know the suited learning styles for them.
Thanks :)

What an upbeat reflection Evangeline! Great reading before going to bed!

This week I would like to write a refection on the reading "Extraordinary Teachers, The essence of excellent teaching" by F. Stephenson.

The author lists characteristics of extraordinary teachers and give some more details about them. According to Stephenson there are 6 key characteristics of extraordinary teachers:
- they have great passion for their work
- they know what to teach, how to teach it and how to improve
- they excel at creating exciting classroom environment
- they connect exceptionally well with the students
- they challenge the students to their full potential
- they get extraordinary results

I agree with what the author says and I wish it would be that easy to become an exceptional teachers.
I know that teachers should be passionate, have the necessary knowledge, willing to learn, be there for their students, spend hours correcting homework, have a great relationship with the students, create exciting classroom environment etc.

I'm doing most of those things (Yes, I am quite confident I am already doing them) yet I'm far from being an exceptional teacher.

The problem I had with the reading is that the comments came from college students, and in my opinion teaching at the university and a high school is very different.

Well, the author does not take into the consideration students. It pretty much sounds to me like: do this and that and you will be exceptional. He is kind of assuming that the students will respond how you expect them to respond to what you are doing. Well, that might be the case with university students as they usually study because they WANT to study. So a person who teaches at a university mostly have quite motivated and mature students. This is not always the case with primary and high school students. Some of them are immature, some do not really want to be at school but they were forced by their parents. Some study at a high school but they would rather learn at a vocational school etc. So many times even though a teacher does everything he or she can, the students do not respond as he or she would like them to respond.

For me, the student factor was missing here. Also, there isn't much mentioned about the parents. For me a child's education depends on 3 factors: teachers, parents and the student himself / herself.

We can't say, like Stephenson, that following these and that will make as exceptional. We must not forget that if a students does not have the motivation, parents are not willing to help there is very little a teacher can do. Yes, we can try to motive, we can do our best, yet we, the teachers, are only 1 out of 3 factors involved in the student education.

The reading was good, I'm not saying no to it, and will surely help me to become a better teacher. Still, this is not the first time I see the authors are too optimistic and do not consider other factors (parents and students themselves) when talking about improving education system.

Sorry for posting 2 comments but one comment was too long.

Applications:
1. As an administrator I should watch my teachers and make sure they are willing to learn and willing to improve themselves. I should choose (keep) only teachers who want to be the best and do everything they can to be the best. On my side I should provide them opportunities to develop themselves: training courses, seminars etc.

2. As a teacher, and I'm talking here about myself, I should probably spend more time correcting my students' homework and spend a little bit more time on giving them feedback.

3. As a teacher I should try to be the best, I should constantly try to improve myself. Also, I should "pressure" my employer (my school) to provide me with more training and opportunities to improve myself to be a better teacher. Also, I should realize that I can always be better!

P.S. The time is often what stops us (me?) from being exceptional. Even though I would love to give my students more time, talk to them etc. I am very limited by time. The schedules are too busy today, the students start in the morning and learn till 16:00, with no breaks! They just have no time to come to see me and talk to me. Also, as high school students, they usually can't stay after school because... after school they go to study outside!

Marcin, very true, there are a lot of limitations in the school environments we work in as you outline very thoroughly: and it is true that adopting these practices will not solve all these challenges or even necessarily the majority of them. However they are very helpful as a starting point and should perhaps be viewed as such, rather than as a magic bullet type solution to all problems. Cheers

This week’s discussion has been by far the most interesting and exciting for me. As a teacher I want to learn different teaching practices from other teachers to find out what works for them and how we can improve our teaching strategies. One of the things I enjoy most about coming to the classes in ABAC is meeting other teachers from different schools around Bangkok and learning their experiences. They seem more real to me than reading the best teaching practices from the text book. Another highlight of the class last night was hearing the different ideas of how to create an exciting classroom. I learned so many things from my classmates, and I want to try them for my class
We discussed about the six characteristics of extraordinary teachers, and Stephenson put passion as the first one. Of all the six characteristics of extraordinary teachers, one thing I can confidently say I have is passion. I’m still learning to create the exciting classroom environments and trying my best to connect to the students. The most difficult thing for me as a teacher is to challenge the students to reach their full potential. But I can confidently say that teaching is my passion. It is encouraging to learn that “teaching is a learned profession” and I can learn to be an extraordinary teacher. But without passion for teaching, I won’t even pass a mediocre teacher stage. I’m encouraged by the great stories of many teachers before me of how they inspire their students, and I also want to inspire my students like they did to theirs.
3 applications:
1) I need to constantly find ways to improve myself. Nowadays there are many resources available such as educational seminars, workshops, journals, and the websites for teachers’ professional development I will stay in touch with other teachers to share teaching strategies in all content areas and grade levels.
2) Have positive assumptions about my students that every single student can learn.
3) I will continue to create a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment for my students. If the students feel that they are physically and emotionally safe, it is easier to trust the teacher and their friends.

Zarni, if you maintain that passion, then the rest will follow in due course.

Reflection # 8

Just like What Zarni said this class was really interesting as we learned about the different teaching practices and what might work, and how can we improve our lessons. One of the things I enjoy most about last night's class was when we discussed about different ideas of how to engage students. I learned so many things from my classmates, and I want to try them out when i teach.
Since I am new in this field I will try my best to connect to the students. according to me one of the most difficult thing is how to get my students to like the subject. during our group discussion, we had also discussed about this and about the fact that what do we as teachers expect from our students. If we are expecting something, it also means that our student are also expecting something from their teachers. Many things like what Gaye said that we shouldnt talk to the students but talk with them. another point was getting the students to act out a 'drama' which is related to the topic.

3 applications:
1) I constantly need to imrove myself, find different methods that will help me become a better teacher. I should try to use different teaching methods to get the best result.
2) Role - Play: As i mention earlier that in order to get the students engaged to the lesson, I would divide the students in groups and tell them to enact out a play with the moral of a concept taught in class.
3) Another way to engage with my students is to make them write an essay in class about themselves and make sure you let them know that it is confidential, this way I might be able to understand my students more and plan out my lessons according to their needs.

@ Marcin: I agree time is a barrier and we can only do our best within our limitations. 

The reading this week was very inspiring. It motivates you to always aim higher. It made me reflect on myself and look into areas of self- improvement. I look forward to reading or even buying the book as I’m sure it will be beneficial in many ways. I like and agree with what Dr. Andy said about the field of education where you can grow and improve throughout your lifetime and about how it is important to make positive assumptions. I also enjoyed the class discussions and it brought about various great ideas to suit everybody. I have mentioned a few of the many great ideas in my applications.

Applications

1. Connecting with students: I think it is very important in education. Acknowledging your students by name is a great way to show respect to them. Also, providing time outside the classroom where they can come and speak to you about anything. This helps build trust. Others like talking with them rather than to them in the classroom, in my opinion is highly powerful in helping to connect with them.

2. Making Assumptions: Being optimistic is a required characteristic for a great teacher. You always assume changes can be made and things can always be better whether it is your student’s performance, the classroom environment or the curriculum. I think it is the right attitude to success.

3. Improvement: Always looking for ways to improve yourself by learning and reading. This method will be modeled by your students and they will work hard to improve themselves.

I too am inspired when I get to read uplifting reflections like the previous two!

Reflection 7 From Venus (Jinxin)
Key points:
1. You can make assumption what will happen.
It is better to believe the better way, and cheat a little bit.
In 1961, Kennedy promise to send a man to the moon and go back at the end of the decade.
-----It is a powerful statement for a president.
If you do not know, your student is clever or not, it is better to think it is clever.
The world is your home, and you can do everything in your world.
2. We may take some steps as follow:
We can fix what is wrong. We have the power to affect change. We have the ability and tools to change. Current system is flawed, underachieving, and in need of change.
3. What is on the list of “What Extraordinary Teachers Teach”? What is not on the list and Why?
What is his goal? -----it is a process model.
Give a man for a fish feed him for a day, and teach man how to fish feed him for a life.
Benchmark and memorization is not on the list.
Process/ product
If you have good sequence, you may get high products.
4. How to create the exciting classroom environment?
Vote before the debate. (Check how people feel about it)
5. How to connect with the students?
A. Acknowledge by name it and create environment relating to lesson
B. Essays , journals , personal, spent casual time with students
C. Role models ,use engaging drama
D. Trust, respect---safe environment
E. Rapport
F. Offering time for feelings and life outside school

Application:
1. I really appreciate Stephenson’s Assumptions, which is not blindly optimistic; however, it did give me the confidence and hope to make some change in my future teaching. I get the experience in this week. I find the Chinese assessment I made for my primary four students seems a little bit hard for the students, which make me feel hard to correct their speaking and fewer and fewer students come to give me assignment. I fix it with changing my assessment style from letting students speak out the words to letting them follow my speaking and point out the correct picture, which make them feel much easier and feel very excited and have a sense of accomplishment after it. “Never say impossible, everything is possible in a willing heart”.
2. The movie “the freedom writer “I see recently really enlighten me. The sharp conflict between the students and the teacher gradually become a sense of home in the class under the devour of this extraordinary teacher. She really has passion in the class and even in the life after the class. After observing what the students situation, the teacher find most of students in her class are in the fear and anger because of the racial problems. She arrange game to help the students find their common (lost friend in racial problem), and offer notebook to let students express their feeling and thinking. She even arranges a dinner after visiting the Holocaust library for students. The really connection between the teacher and student give them more hope and safety to the student. All of these lead to an extraordinary result.
3. Talking about how to create an exciting classroom environment, I am working on it right now on my students in primary four. I prefer give the children praise and privileges than candy and star. It is good to see their proud in eyes when I give the praise. They also excited when I give someone the privilege to come to blackboard and draw. When I am teaching the fruit, I just draw an apple in the blackboard and let them finish the least. What is going to be improved is that some students do not want to do any writing and only want to go the blackboard to draw. However, I cannot let them to go to the blackboard all the time, which we need is classroom discipline at this time.

we had learnt about one most important and interest topics on wednesday night. Naturally every teacher has his/her own congenital ability in teaching but to be come an extraordinary or exceptional teacher is a challenging task for almost every teacher. It is undeniable that extraordinary teachers can perform much more than normal people realized or expected. However, it doesn't mean that all the teachers can't become extraordinary teachers. Every teacher can become an extraordinary teacher if he/she wants to. In "extraordinary teachers" chapter, author Frederick J Stephenson portraied six characteristics of exceptional teachers. In real situation, extraordinary teachers' characteristics are more than those factors and I would like to add additional facts about them.

1. extraordinary teachers are the ones who not only seriously dedicate their lives in their work but also never surrender when confronting with potential problems.

2. The real extraordinary teachers never said the word "tired" while teaching regardless of low-salary and regions and always stand beside students as facilitators.

3. The genuine extraordinary teachers are those who never conceal their knowledge regarding their subjects and always proud of their students' great successes.

Week eight reflections and thoughts

After week eight class, i understood one thing more clearly that assumption is very important and powerful.As for me, four points of Stephenson's assumption;
1)we can fix what is wrong
2)we have the power to affect change
3)we have to ability and tools to change
4)current system is flawed, underachieving and in need of change are very powerful and true. Moreover, we discussed about six characteristics of extraordinary teachers and process(the way how you are doing)/product(the result or outcome).

Applications,
1)As a teacher, i can motivate and encourage my students by keeping assumption on them. I think that is also very important for every single of teacher.
2)As a teacher, i have to know that how to improve myselfe not only in teaching area but also in other areas because "Teaching is a learned profession".
3)To be active classroom, i have to arrange classroom very intresting and exciting environment such as changing classroom arrangement according to lesson, having debate or discussion among students and so on.
4)To influence or realize students, i have to acknowledge by name, read personal essays, offer chance to express feeling and have rapport.

From this week’s class, we have learned a lot about extraordinary teachers and how we can make efforts and try to be the one. First of all, assumptions are very powerful; therefore, we should always think positively about our students and expect that they can do it. Also, it is important to know that teaching is a “learned” profession. Even though I feel I am not so extraordinary yet, I can always try to be a better teacher and learn from my own experience. From the discussion in the class, I have learned many creative ideas to make the classroom learning more effective and enjoyable for students and also for teachers. It was good to know other teachers’ ideas in the class, and there are many ideas I would really like to try in my own class soon.

3 Applications
1) There are many ways to make the classroom more exciting. One example is to relate the topic or subject they are studying to their interest. In my Japanese course at university, I have an assignment for students to make a presentation about their favorite Japanese songs. Many Japanese major students love Japanese pop culture, cartoons, etc. So, they really enjoy presenting about their favorite Japanese singers or bands. In the presentation, they have to introduce new vocabulary and pick up one grammar point from the lyrics and explain it in the class. So it is a good language practice as well.

2) Also, to connect well with students, it is good to engage with them outside the classroom. I think it is really true from my own experience. I sometimes see my students outside the class (eat supper together etc.) And it is a good opportunity to know them. They talk more about themselves and about other students in the class. They seem to be more comfortable talking with me using Japanese (maybe because they don’t have to worry about not making mistakes.) Also, they tell me how my class is. Their reflections are really helpful. I don’t really think it works with younger students like this, but it works for me with university students.

3) Just as some other people wrote, I would like to continue my learning to be a better teacher. I think that’s why I am studying here now. Educational systems change, and there are always new ways to improve teaching and student learning. I would like to know up-to-date information about education so that I could help my students in the most effective way.

Thanks!
Chie Katsuda

After reading the previous comments, I saw that last week's class did almost the same effect on most of us by getting us realize that "we need passion for learning" to become better teachers.
Since I started this course I am really enjoying being a student again and having the chance to learn something new every week. I believe that being a life long learner is a "must" for being a good teacher and also for being a self-satisfied person as well.
As a result;
1)I want to keep the learning going for the rest of my life either through a proper school education or through the life itself, by allocating time for learning.
2)Get my students value the importance of learning by teaching them some scientific facts which they can use in their daily life to solve simple problems. Emphasize on the fact that even learning some small tips can make their life much easier.
3)Try to be a good model for my students, by reflecting my own passion for learning, to them.

Thanks

@Gaye I can't agree more. A teacher must constantly try to improve himself / herself. I, just like you, really enjoy the courses and I also think they helped me a lot. I am already thinking what to do after I graduate :)

Several of you have mentioned your understanding of the importance of teaching as a "learned profession" meaning that there are skill sets we can learn in order to grow as teachers: Gaye, also above, emphasizes the passion for teaching and being a life long learner. I think these two go hand in hand. When we light the fires of our passion for teaching, we automatically will seek out ways and means for continued learning and improvement. Thanks for the GREAT contributions, folks!

It was a great class, I have learnt many things from the class and from reading the book. We discussed six characteristics of extraordinary teacher, specifically about the passion and other characteristics through activities. Personally, I like to learn with team working. And I think that I can learn many other things from my classmates. As I learn from my friend now,I realize that group working is very effective in teaching and i will definitely use this techniques when I teach ,especially in my country where team working is very weak in classrooms( teaching). Another thing I have learnt in this week, is how to make the classrooms interesting. I got a list of
technique of how to crate classroom interesting from my classmates.

My applications;

{1} When I am a teacher or administrator, I will create some competitive group-working activities for teachers, and at the same time I will let them see how team working is effective and let them practice in the classroom.

{2} In order to be a better teacher or administrator, I have to give some more time with students and parents(if possible) to involve in students learning. (In our region, it's possible)

{3}To make optimistic assumptions on students or to expect their potential in the higher level is also important to become a better teacher.

Thanks.

Week-eight extraordinary teacher discussion was the most exciting week for me. We discussed very interesting topics such as; (a) what is extraordinary teacher? (b) What extraordinary teachers teach? (c) How can we go about connecting exceptionally well with students?; and so on. Furthermore, we discussed mainly six characteristics from among others 300. From class discussion and group discussion, I had got to know what I have not noticed before and gained valuable knowledge from class and reading text book.
- Teachers’ passion on their jobs and knowledge of what to teach, how to teach and the more important is how to improve the concept of both teachers themselves and students.
- Challenge student; both administrators and teachers must know which elements can motivate students to accept challenge of teacher expectations and to fulfill their potential. It reminds me that I have to practice and improve a lot my ability before entering teaching career.
- (a)Excel at creating exciting environments: I would rather make the class in positive atmosphere by humour, reward, give example from their interested field and use formal and informal teaching methods. (b) Connect with student; I prefer my position to students more likely close friend than as a teacher, cooperating, helping students to feel safe in their mind, motivating individually if necessary, and observe the basis need that sometimes they even don’t want to reveal.

Thanks. :)

Ms. Hnin, good observation, the closer you are to your students the more of themselves, their real needs and concerns, they will share with you. This is because you build genuine trust in a relationship. And trust makes everything work better and go more smoothly in relationship. This is why I always say that the conventional wisdom (that means the common way of thinking) that says we should not get close to our students is for the most part just plain wrong. Nice work!

I have learned what the characteristics of extraordinary teaching are and many different aspects of how to create exciting environment , how to connect well with students from my class-mate, from week eight discussion. Six characteristics of extraordinary teaching_passion( put a lot of energy, visual, touchable); know what to teach, how to teach, how to improve; excel creating exciting environment; how to connect with student; challenge students; and extraordinary result_was discussed. Remarkably, "what extraordinary teachers teach" was also discussed in week eight. Those factors which relate to "what extraordinary teachers teach" can be found in the following-
-knowledge of field
-important
-vocabulary
-the value of the mind
-process of understanding
-creative, effective
-responsibility
-attitude, hard works
-how to research and so on.
Then, we had group discussion linked to this questions seriously ( what is not on the list of extraordinary teachers teach?). As a result, we didn't see how to teach memorization skills. Another question, what we have discussed, was how to create exciting classroom environment? Many results appeared from different groups such as let student share with a group or share their visions( it was used by Dr. Andy),creating humor and debate, sharing about something related to real life examples and so on. Futhermore, this question was also talked about by group. How can we go about 'connecting well with student'? The results from dissimilar groups were let student think their concepts; acknowledge by name; create environment related to lesson; essay, journals, personal; role model, use engaging drama, trust, respect, safe environment; rapport or understanding; and offering time for feelings.
Applications:
1) As a teacher, knowing what to teach, how to teach, how to improve is very significant to promote student's knowledge and ability, and it is also important to improve school climate as an administrator that I suppose. This characteristic will be used in my future, as an educator.
2) I have found the consequence of creating exciting environment in the class room in this week. Dr.Andy let us share our own aspects, create to brainstorm for his students. I really get excited before going Dr. Andy class and while I was in his class. That's why, I believe that my students will also be excited by creating like Dr.Andy and like this characteristic.
3) I know if I want to be extraordinary teacher, it will be difficult for me. But I will focus on these characteristics to lead my students' directions effectively to reach their goals in the future, as an educator. I will try as much as I can. "nothing more important than helping students learn" is my motor from now on.
Thanks!

"Extraotdinary Teachers, The Essence of Excellent Teaching is about achievement and promise" words from the beginning of this chapter is for all any kind, any age,any level, and whosoever who are being in teaching. Week eight discussion is more about to characterize the extraordinary teachers by their passion, knowledge, creativeness, motivation skills (-self & others), and their achievement.

applications

--- I could not see in Exhibit-1 about the extraordinary teachers teach - like through possitive emotionally distribution to students or others-
--- but trough that have outlined in the list in exhibit-1, I may try to posess all-
--- and I know all of these are extraordinary difficulties for me as well but not impossible then-

Make assumption in existing conditions is a good way for learners and instructors. Especially in the science , biology and research .assumption is powerful , students can acquire basic skills and develop higher-order thinking competences at the same time. On the other side ,teacher can promote thinking in application fields.
Dean G.Rojek’s statement “I sincerely believe that every student is educable, but some are simply not as intellectually gifted as others are” so sensible, every excellent teacher must to realize this .and understand what to teach, how to teach ,how to help every student .
Application :
1,for me ,even for majority teacher ,keep passion is a big challenge .as we know, long time take same work will while way our passion ,no passion ,no good results .so , I ‘ll
change my attitude ,and think positive .,challenge my self ,love and engage in teaching in the future .
motive students engage in their learning same important also .as a good teacher ,motive learner is one standard of appraisals.
2, crate a exciting environments is one important part for excellent teaching .how to crate exciting environments ? Catching students’ interests; Encourage students to pay close attention and minimize distraction; Focus on active teaching –learning ,for example :different exercise ,field trip ,take activities that making more enjoyable .
3,excellent teacher must to know how to make teaching -learning interesting .for example ,does infusing the classroom with novel ,un usual ,surprising exercise .

Thanks to interesting topics taught and many lively discussions, I really felt that even though I knew alot of the concepts before the class, with the help of the class many of the concepts I must say became clearer. I believe that in today's world, many teachers nowadays "pass on" information rather than "explain" it. Usually when a teacher passes on information the students might/might not remember it for long, but if a teacher somehow is able to correctly nail the information on the head in the sense explain it in a way students remember for life or for a long long time, then I could say that's a quality of a good teacher.
Applications would be as follows:

1) One of the points which I thought I would like to share regarding creating an exciting classroom environment would be giving space to the students, so that they can do what they're interested in. This could be applicable only in a few cases but wherever it's applied it produces excellent results. For example, if there has to be a project for that subject, if possible, let the students choose whichever topic they are interested in and also instead of giving them the whole specific format of a report, just mention the key elements which should be present but let the students think and decide what the appropriate format should be and the teacher could on the side act like advisors for the project as well to make sure students are walking on the correct path.

2) I think its very important that every teacher stresses on the process of "thinking" in the classroom. If a teacher is well prepared with excellent questions, basically prepared to do a lot of scaffolding, then it gives good opportunities for students to actually understand the concept. I don't think it's good for teacher to keep spoon-feeding, rather teachers should encourage students to think and explore more if possible. I'm trying to imply the meaning of the quote in other words: "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, Teach a man how to fish, you feed him for life."

3)It is said that, when it becomes very difficult to speak out how you feel, writing them instead can help a lot. If a student is unable to express his/her feelings in class, then somehow the teacher can assign the students to write essays on various topics instead. There are chances that the student will feel more comfortable writing how they feel rather than speaking it out to the teacher. Therefore, allowing students to write essays/journals is a good way to find out what's going on in the students' minds.

Reflecting from last week's class, the concept of extraordinary teacher's was quiet interesting. Im sure we all would like to be extraordinary teachers someday but that comes with great passion and responsibility. As a teacher we are role model's for our students. Our passion is shared wit our students so the more exciting we make our classroom environment the more the active it would make our students. Moreover, we discussed about the passion to learn. Teacher and students both learn at the same time, we grow can discover things together.
- I would keep a positive studying environment in the classroom at all times.
- I would also believe in my students ability, and have high expectations for them to reach their full potential.
- Lastly, as a teacher i would keep learning in order to share this extraordinary thoughts with my students as i believe that education is a never ending process of learning as long as we have the passion we can learn at any period of our life without age limilations. :)

Laxshmi, I appreciate the distinction you make between passing on information and explaining it. This is an important concept and I suggest all of you have a look at Laxshmi's post, above, in regards to this. Dr. Andy

Extraordinary Teachers
To be an extraordinary teacher takes a lot of time and effort- at least in my opinion. In last week’s reading the author summed up six (but not limited to six) main characteristics of an extraordinary teachers which are: passion, knowing what to teach- how- and how to improve, excelling in creating exciting environments, connecting with students, challenging students, and (to sum up the rest) getting extraordinary results. These six umbrella many more characteristics of being an extraordinary teacher which lead to conclude that being an absolutely great teacher is not a walk in the park. To add to that, great teachers aren’t born either – I would think that it takes time. I believe that there are some people who might have a gift or talent for teaching, but I don’t think that they’re great at it at first – they have to learn about to be great. It was mentioned in the last class that “teaching is a ‘learned’ profession”. This means to me:
1. As an aspiring teacher, I need to always find ways to improve myself and my strategies. What’s a better place to start than right now- with this M.Ed. program in ABAC. This is exactly why I’m here, but it doesn’t stop here. I see this as a stepping stone along the path of being a teacher. On the job learning is also a key aspect to my education as an educator. I take both my experiences from the course and experiences in the workplace to help me develop.
2. Make a list of teachers who are great to me and try to follow along in their footsteps. This is not only list but state why they seemed to be so great to me and try to follow their examples. I think this could be beneficiary to anyone.
3. Feed the passion. The author’s six characteristics might not be in order of importance, but the first item – passion- would have been one I might’ve written first as well. Why do something if you did not have passion for it. If you do have passion for it- keep it going, stay motivated, continually learn, and stay focused. I have a tendency to be easily swayed from focus at times and its easy for me to loose interest at times as well. If I were to be a teacher- a good one- the passion needs to be charged. There are a number of ways I could do this: network with other teachers, keep up to date with the latest information about teaching, loving students always and recognize their needs, be inspired by stories of other teachers portrayed in either books or motion picture. I could go on. I feel that teaching needs to be a passion fueled profession.
To conclude, I would like to quote Jack Black in School of Rock when he says, “Those can’t do, teach; those who can’t teach, teach P.E.” Hilarious- maybe- this could be true for some, but I certainly don’t think it’s true. I would say that, “Those who teach, need to progress in teaching well; those who aren’t great at it can improve and be great, but all of this ain’t no walk in the park.” I believe that teaching needs to be continual and everyone who wants to be a teacher must never stop learning.

As Dr. F.J.stephenson's perspective,a extraordinary teacher have to with six characteristics such as:(1)passion,(2)know what to teach, how to teach and how to improve,(3)excel ar creating exciting enviroments,(4)connect with students,(5)challenge students, and (6)extraordinary result.
All right, as a teacher, have to with a kind of high passion, love your own occupation, love your students. Before you to be a teacher, please ask yourself a question as "why i will to become a teacher?" The passion of teacher can be affect the student, and they can feel you.so, please keep a kind of high passion when you take the first step into the classroom no matter what happends with you.
And next, knowledge is obbligato arms for a teacher. How to deliver all of you know to the student, that also is significant skill for a teacher.
Even not everybody can reach all of characteristics upon mentioned, but we always try. To our best do everything well done.

Application:
- for me, i am a emotional people, i always do anything i want. But i had to learn hwo to control since i was a teacher, at least when i face to my students.i found out the students can feel when i unhappy even through i never said out.To opposite, the students were affected when i keep high passion, even sometime they bored student, but my emotion can influence and arouse them interested.

-a process of education like link of learning and teaching. The teacher teaching actully they also learning at the same time.As a teacher, I continually improve myself in process of education.

- How can you creating exciting enviroments for you students? As we know the students always with strong curiosity at the beginning, but how can keep it going on, that's the problem for teacher. For me, i always telling the stories, about the cultures, lives, or sometime joking. I try my best to do everything i can do to make envrioment of class relax and interesting.

ps: to honestly, the real extraordinary teacher i have never seen so far. but anyway, i try to be the one!

The discussion on qualities of the good teachers we had in the last class was very interesting to me. It was interesting to hear the different ideas from the class which I will be able to use while teaching in future.

Teaching is not a birth skill but a skill that is acquired through learning. The expertise of teachers depends upon their knowledge and behavior. First of all to be a good teacher or extraordinary teacher we have to love our role, we have to love being with the students. As a teacher we have to use personal qualities and our positive experiences in order to communicate well with the students. Here are some applications which I plan to apply while teaching room in future.

(a) Connect with students: To build the classroom environment rich and to be a good teacher the first thing we need to do is to have a good connection with the students. As a teacher we have to build trust with them in order to build the trust we have to show then that we care for them. Asking them personal questions about their parents, house, and other personal things can make them feel close to us. We have to show positive attitude towards them. Appreciating their work, motivating them is also other way to develop the trust.

(b) Creating stimulation in classroom: Another way to be a good teacher is to make the classroom as much as excited. Use stimulation to make the classroom excitement. for example related to the topic of the course make the students production like drama in which each one have to take part . Like in social studies if you are teaching about Egypt. Make the drama of Egyptian stories let them were the Egyptian custom and prepare the Egyptian food for the lunch on that day. Another is inviting the author relating to their books will also make them very much exciting and interesting to read the books.

(c) Support students abilities: Students are different to each other. Their abilities are also different. As a teacher we always have to appreciate their individual abilities. Some could be very good in reading while some will be good at writing and some are good in sports. And even some could be very fast in reading and others could be slow. We always have to give respect their individual ability and weakness and give opportunity to them to work in their own pace.

After finished the last class I had two big idea about this word the first idea is about how can we encourage ourselves to concern more about students. In the reality we can see that many teachers must facing with a lot of limitation in their workplace such as economic problem, school policy that might not support them, the teaching load, some traditional administrator etc. I believe that most of the teachers want to created the best way of teaching to deal with the student learning styles and give more care to them. The problem is the education revolution concept couldn’t implied into all level of education administration in Thailand because it’s need the time to implement.
Now the situation that I see is most of the extraordinary class can be happen in the private school that the school’s policies have support. In the same time the parent need to pay more for this kind of school especially bilingual or international program. The teachers have suitable class size have appropriate time to taking care.
The second idea from this class is the word “ I teach I learn” I really agree with this word because after I give an advising to my student and listen to their idea it’s also inspired me many things and give me the new idea everyday. I learn to become the better man everyday when I see the student. I learnt that the teacher should share not only knowledge with the student but also the attitude, experience and learning goal. That can let them go along together.
Seem as it may be impossible to be a perfect teacher but I think that we have many ways to be a good teacher.

Application
1. As a teacher I will listen the student more and ask them why they need to come to study ask about their expectation. Try to offer help for them and show them that I ready to help them. Don’t judge them as I see but try to accept them as they are. If anything that they want to know more I will ask them to find the information with me and come to discuss together.
2. As the administrative I will set the policy that support to the extraordinary teacher by the flexible time, the facility, open for the idea that the teacher need to encourage their student. Give the reward for the most contribution teacher of the year to recognize the good teacher and for inspired the other teacher.

I didn't realize that topic of essence of excellent teaching was interesting for me before the class.I thought it was such a basic concept for teachers but I deeply learned in the class and review it.I changed my attitude.I found it was amazing in this lesson. It's been a great source of pride and inspiration for me to observe extraodinary teacher through this lesson.Dr.Andy created exciting classroom by making discussion group of students. We shared ideas and brainstormed about how we can go about connecting exceptionally well with students and activities of extraordinary teachers excelling at creating exciting classroom environments.I also liked Dr.Andy said about the words of" process and product" Processes need balance, and see the result that continue to walk the right path.Teachers intend to make students fulfill their potential.Product is the end result.

Applications:

1.Teachers need to be observed.I'll arrage peer observation.Every teacher will sign up for lesson observations.I will give freedom for teachers to decide who. They will write down the person they would like to observe. It will be person observing,Person to be observed and date arranged (maybe before the end of term ) on the form.We will get comments in the classroom environment and effective of questioning comment.I,as administrator, can't observed every teachers just only one person but it's good to know sharing ideas with teachers together and to constunctively criticism.

2.To make sure teacher are caring for bilingual students.Sometimes Native speaker teacher misunderstand students because the student doesn't know English as their mother tongue. This mean that all teaching has to take this into account.I try to think and set up a policy will enable bilingual learners to learn effictively but I should have explicit strategies in order to maximize thier lerning and understanding.

3.School should recruit fully qualified and experienced teacher with enthusiasm for teaching. If they don't have much experienced but they endeavour in teaching. We can give them a chance. We can make a special course util teacher reach teaching approaches.

Thank you.

Reflection 8:
Today learning focused on the characteristic of how extraordinary teachers teach and how they handle the environment. As Dean G. Rojek said: ”I sincerely believe that every student is educable,…"

In my student teaching year, I have a mentor teacher whom I admire about how she's very sensitive to everything around her. she could think on her feet and response to students or parents or others at the same time. Nothing miss her noticed. Yes, she possesses all six qualities of the extraordinary teachers:
**Take the extra miles to...
- connect with students

-be passionate about their field

-creating a positive learning environment

-challenge students potential in their learning...

Process: how to reach something/ Product: end results –need a balance, see the result so they could continue to walk in the right path.
** the “positive assumption” about students –don’t lose anything, but the result is very powerful. Give them room to test out, to go beyond of who they think or other assume about them.

Applications:
1. Have positive assumption: I love this method! I will definitely try it out in my class and my community, especially with whom that need more attention.(Be positive)
2. Continue to work har at improving myself by attending professional development (workshops, reading update research about teaching, and learn from my colleagues
.
3. I will continue to be the best teacher by providing that safe, learning environment where my students want to be and active in learning.

Well...it was a great discussion topic again for our class. When everyone was discussing about Extraordinary Teachers, I felt like I were in my class to teach my students and thinking about what is the best way to handle the students to become interested in lesson.

I really like what Dr.Andy mentioned about when he was kid, even he tried to knocking on the table to play with his fingers like playing music and he remembered the History lectures very well.
I have seen this kind of kid in my class and even he never tried to write the lesson in the class, he always gets a highest score in his class.
To be an extraordinary teacher is not easy as we say and it's really hard to handle the student's behavior to improve the learning skills. Even now I am really into Admin views, but now I try to imagine what an ideal teacher for students is.

1) I always try to feel the students as we are sailing on the same boat and I respect their opinion and I always ask them what do we want to learn together for next week and let them think about the topic and we choose the topic together once a month. I started to use these 2 months ago and feel like it is really work out well. Even I am IT teacher, I let them know we are studying together and I am just guiding them to get their destination more easily. Because of this we can get the trust and respect from our students.

2) I have seen more than 5 kids who don’t want to talk to teacher. That's so difficult to build a friendship between a students and a teacher if students don't even talk one sentence. So, I use the methods of Essay/Journals teacher in our school and let them write Essay about my subject and I found out that they have great imagination than other students. They write everything what they think and giving only one comment on their work means we already build a good friendship.

3) Thirdly, Teacher needs to cheat a student in a good way. Most of the students afraid of reporting to their parents about their marks and behavior. So, I think if it is only doing well for student, we should cheat a student in a good way to tame them.

We learnt six characteristics of extraordinary teachers. We learnt about what FJ Stephenson talks about what extraordinary teachers teach and discuss about that a lot in the class and learnt a lot from our classmates’ experiences. That is how do they create an exciting classroom environment and the comparison between the traditional teachers and creative/motivated teaches. I would say last week lessons are quite an inspiration for me. If people want low-stress, high paying jobs, forget teaching. However, if someone wants to give something back to society, and fortunately many do, teaching is a very meaningful way to make a contribution (Stephenson). When I read the book, it makes me feel that teacher’s duty is not easy and not a small thing that everybody can be perfect. I found many characteristics of extraordinary teachers’ for me to adapt from Stephenson.
1) Stephenson’s’ characteristics may be the criteria for my selecting teachers if I am in the administration position. I would observe especially how much passion they have for their works.
2) Need to be trustworthy for the students to make a bond where they can learn and work willingly with me. In order to get their trust the teacher may need to spend more time with them and again know and understand them individually.
3) I agree with the second point of Laxshmi that “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, Teach a man how to fish, you feed him for life." ‘The teacher should make the students believe that learning is a participative sport by practicing until learning becomes second nature to them’ according to Stephenson. Motivate the students and challenging them to reach to their full potential.

Many many interesting points but the highlight of this week for me was Dr. F. J. Stephenson's assumptions.
How I got inspiration from those are as follows:

1) "We can fix what's wrong": I will continue to hold on to my belief that no child is beyond salvation, no matter what has gone wrong in his/her education previously.

2) "We have the power to affect change": I will continue to believe in myself and my abilities that I can make a positive change in my students' lives.

3) "Current system is flawed and in need of change": This is a common problem in many schools. Rather than taking the easy way out, I will stand my ground in order to improve the conditions of my school for the benefit of my students.

Kind regards,
Dr. Murat Kiymaz

From the first week of discussion until last week, each section has been reminding something about teaching and being a teacher. It was interesting when we were looking at the different characteristics of an extraordinary teacher. Two words that really touched me were “Trust” and “Passion”. I agreed with Laxshmi that nowadays teachers are “passing on” information rather that “explaining” it to them. I came to realization that sometimes teachers are “passing on” information because they already have a mindset in them that children will not understand even if teachers give good explanation about the knowledge. In my opinion, one of the obstacles will be: Trust. At the beginning of the class last week, we went through several assumptions that teachers could have towards their students. Assumptions of students’ performance and ability starts from the word TRUST. Teachers can develop high and positive assumptions towards their students because they believe that they can do it. If the teacher does not trust in students’ ability to learn, then the teacher will teach and “pass on” knowledge with low expectation and even spoon-feeding the students without letting the students to experience, expose and expand. Students can feel the trust imparted into them by the teachers, if they feel that the teachers are giving up on them, they will give up on themselves. Never give up on the students because you will never know how high they can fly!

When a teacher put trust in their students, then the teachers are definitely passionate about educating them. Being knowledgeable, having good classroom management or even good teaching methods are not enough for an educator, because one of the ingredients that blend all these materials together is PASSION. Teaching with passion connects the teacher with their students from all perspectives, not only in the area of knowledge, but also the way of life, interpersonal skills, intrapersonal skills and other things that the book does not teach.

Therefore, my three applications for this week will be:

(1) Learn to trust my students and be passionate about everything that I teach by trusting my students by helping them to develop their creativity, their thinking skills and interpersonal skills

(2) Include more interactive and thought-provoking activities into my daily lessons so that students will know that I trusted them and hope that they will be passionate about learning too.

(3) Uphold my subordinates or people in the same field (teachers) through movies, journals, articles or books that talks about passionate teaching as when teachers can encourage and uphold one another in this challenging task, passion for teaching can be effectively and efficiently prolong and maintain.

This week I learned two things; 1) that it's ok and safe to make certain assumptions about your students. 2) the different learniing styles and how most teachers teach basing on their prefered learning style.

Applications
1. I will try to make positive assumptions that can enhance my students learning abilities.

2. I will endeavor to search for each particular student's learning styles and use them as oftenly as i possibly could.

3. I will watch out for my prefered learning style so that i don't overuse it and forget students' prefered learning styles.

Just an afterthought: It seems to me that Stephenson, in his enumeration of characteristics of extraordinary teachers, is suggesting that teachers should be perfect...he mentioned almost about every good characteristic I know!

Exellent in teaching is not important, even though we are quiet, once students trust us and they would follow the instructions. Teaching is alearned behavior. no one is a born teacher. We need to practice and improve ourselves is the best for teaching.
Application
1. No matter we are mastery in our subject area that we teach, we need to understand , patient and support our students.
2. Even though we don't know what to teach, how to teach but we have to know how to improve ourselves.
3. when we teach the students, we need to show the respect to our students so that the students will also learn through our action and also sometimes we need to listen to them out of their studies such as social problems, family problems if they really wanted to speak out and ask for our advice, so that we have chance to know about thier lives and can guide them to be a better person.

This week we read the "Extraordinary Teachers, The essence of excellent teaching" by F.

I agree with what the author says .
Application:

1)improve myself.I think when i know how to teach and teach what and how to imorove ,then ,I will be a usefull teacher.
2)connect with student.I think only we know what the students needs and what are them think about and what a problem they has ,we can help they.in the future ,i will try to be more patiion om every student.
3)creat a exciting enviroment .I will try to creat a exciting and challenge enviroment for student.

thanks

This week class was really interesting for me. As I am new for this field, I learned so many things from my classmate. While in discussion group, I heard my classmates experiences. All are very useful for me though I am not a teacher yet. “Teaching is a learned profession” this encourage me to try hard to become a good teacher. For teachers "passion" is important. To get students’ "trust" is also important for teacher too. I also learned many things to become an extraordinary teacher. Teacher need to learned and practice to become an extraordinary teacher. As I read this reading, I remembered one of my teachers. Most students enjoyed her class. She knew all the students names and many other things that include in an extraordinary teacher in this week reading. She inspire me a lot.
My application
1. I will try to be a better teacher. I will learn and practice to become an extraordinary teacher.
2. As a teacher, I will give time to students to know better. Be always ready for students.
3. As an Administrator, I will provide opportunities to my teachers, who are willing to improve themselves such as training courses, seminars etc.
