First of all, I'm sorry to say that I don't concentrate in class week 11 that much but, I heard somethihg about " No child left behind "> I think this topic Zarni used to present as interesting which is one way to improve education and the purpose is ensure that every children enjoy the benefits of well-prepared teachers, and learning environments.

Applications:

This theory lead me to think more about improving myself, planning before class and concern with "what is the pro and con that my class will get?"

Asking or speaking out is the way to know each other more.

Thanks

In standard based learning, our main concern are the learners, their needs and concerns. The assessment that we, educators, consider when we identify the learners' needs and strengths. We create lessons for our students every week, to enable us to assess them. However, the assessment depends on the teacher. We have the norm reference that we also consider, meaning to say that someone will win and someone will lose. In the norm reference test, “if you don't meet it, you fail”. It measures the performance of one student on the test, against the entire population of the students. For me, I do believe that we should carry on promoting and enhancing the performance and experience of our students. However, it still their choice if they want to pursue their goals. Giving them motivations, as we go along will greatly help them to move on to the next level. There are lots of problems nowadays when it comes to students' interests and beliefs in Education, so much so, that as teachers, we shouldn't blame ourselves in case that they fail our subject, that is if we tried to do everything we can in teaching, helping them cope up with their projects, giving them advises, to the point of calling the attention of their parents, even giving them some of our extra time in tutoring or remedial classes. For lower levels, they are still very young to understand things, we ought to give them a chance, but for higher or upper levels, we should be firm and operate to the designed assessment that we have. As long as were doing our job, we shouldn't worry about the outcome/results of the criteria that we have in assessing them. This is just a guide for us to follow, but we should always remember that teaching is a vocation, we need to be patient and encourage them most of the time. There are also several factors affecting their performance in class which is a clear view of what's happening to them in the classroom. We must give our students a chance and remind them of their responsibilities in the class. Also, inform them, that you as a teacher have obligations too, in the school where you are teaching. An effective teacher is always ready and flexible to all the challenges. We can build and create a student, who can be, one day be well known in certain fields.
Thanks,
Ms. Evan

This week the discussion was on the standards based learning model. This model was compared to the Norm referencing model which is being phased out but still is used in many parts around the world.

Applications
1. As a teachers,i should avoid stereotyping students by putting them into categories of failures, average performers or winner. Instead i should adapt the moto "all can".
2. I should be careful when using the Normal distribution curve to avoid what i just mentioned in point 1 above.
3. When using the standards based model, i should try as much as possible not narrow the content for the sake of merely completing the standards.

JIN XIN(VENUS) KEY POINTS:
1. Improving Standards-Bases Learning---concerning learners, their needs, and concerns.
2. Breaking the things into deliverable parts. (Changeable, needed )
3. Standards argument example:
Pre K ---Kindergarten------------------------------------------------Third grade, reads on grade level
Speaks some English
4 years 100 students
4. Norm referenced system: 20% winners, 20% losers and 60% average people.
98% do cooperation and 2% do competition. Cooperate with coach and team workers.
5. Take criteria tests & Norm referenced tests (create 50% losers)

Applications:
1. In the education system now, no matter in china or other countries in the world, no one can avoid standard. When Chinese people said American is a freedom country, some American friends tell me there are too many standards in that country. In my opinion, we can’t talk about a thing separately, just as the learner. We should talk about learners in different standards-based learning situations. They may be accepted in this standard, but being expelled in the other standard. In this case, no matter as a parents or teachers, we should give very careful judges on children in the base of one specific standard.
2. Dr. Andy gave us the example on children from pre k to third grade, who achieved the reading goals finally at the number of 100 students after 4 years. That was encourageable. Because I always worry about some children really have drawbacks on learning, comparing with other children. However, as teacher, you can never give up your hope and need to keep doing it.
The norm reference system has not told one true: it is changeable! Our learners are change all the time. Words of winners, losers, and average people already are only based on the academic marks. Spirit part of our learners improve can not be easily traced by the standards. Especially the cooperative learning part can seldom be showed through the transcript. As teacher, we should know the invisible value for our learners.

This week’s discussion was about standard-based education. From the discussion, I understood that standard-based education puts learners at the center of its model. Meeting learners’ needs is important. There are agreed-upon standards which students are expected to learn and levels which students are expected to attain. The set of standards guides teaching and learning in the classroom. And, we believe that every learner can achieve those standards. Standard-based education system is partly a reaction to the traditional norm-referencing system which forces some students to fail as well as some others to be successful. Standard-based education does not guarantee everyone’s success, but it gives every student opportunities to achieve goals. In the norm-referencing system, competition was more important, but in standard-based education, cooperation is much more valued.

Applications
1) In my class, I should not compare students’ achievement in a norm-referencing way. My school is not using the system, but I think teachers tend to compare each student relative to others. Instead, I should see if each student reaches the expectation of the course and is ready to go to the next level.
2) I think not only teachers but students compare him or herself to others. In my class, students always want to know what is the mean score of the exam, the highest score, and the lowest score. They want to see how well they do compared to other classmates. But maybe I should let them think in a different way.
3) I should always believe that everyone can achieve the set standards. But, I should also be aware of individual differences in how and when one can reach the level.

Thanks!

It was interesting and, somehow complicated, to understand about the tests, as there are many kind of tests such as achievement tests, standardized tests and standardized based tests. But I am sure that the goal of standard based test is to end social promotion-the idea that students should not left behind their age mate. One thing is that standard based test is really controversial for educators, so there is a number of pro and con.Among many positive points of standard based test, one thing that I got in classroom discussion is that students are highly expected to mastered in their subject field.

Applications:

1.It motivate me think about that every testing systems is not good, and it make me to think about advantages and disadvantages of standard based tests.

2. As a teacher, I would explain students the nature of the standard based test and let them practice sample tests.

3.standard based test is a kind of assessing students' skill and knowledge. Thus , when I am a teacher, i will also use some kind of assessments in my classroom, like assessing their skills and ability through their performance and portfolios.

Thanks.

"Standard-based test" was discussed in week eleven.I have gained the point of two related systems- norm-referenced system and criteria-referenced system.
1. What is norm-referenced system?
In this standardize test, a student score is interpreted by comparing it with how others, some may win or lose.
2.Unlike, the criteria-referenced test in which the teacher focus on comparing the performance of the students the differences level between the beginning and the end. Dr.Andy mentioned " begin with the end".
An example of Dr.Andy, If (100) kids start their learning from kindergarten to third grades, how many can get there at the end of the grade?
The answer was " all of the students".
3. Related to competition and cooperation, there are both competition and cooperation in not only students life also every where. But, most of the percent_98percent_ is in cooperation and only 2 percent in competition that Dr.Andy stated.

Applications:

1)To put the students in appropriate level is significant in student learning. If I were a teacher or administrator, I will use some reliability test to evaluate the students' ability a head.
2)As a teacher, it is also the fact to give some opportunities fairly for students creating their own performances. Because some students may be shameful or scared because of their background, but some may be different.
3) In my point of view, I agree with what Dr.Andy mentioned about difference between competition and cooperation according to some of my experiences. We can gain enormous benefit in cooperation in every particular situation in our life, not only in the class room.

With best,

1.The model of standards-based learning shows the learners at the center, representing the importance of addressing each learner's needs and strengths at the heart of the system of standars-based learning. Each district's and school's decisions about what standards, performance indecators, and grade-level expectations are taught and assessed at what grade level and in what time frame become an importan part of the curriculum triangle.

2.Norm-referenced system
A norm-referenced test is a type of test, assessment, or evaluation which yields an estimate of the position of the tested individual in a predefined population, with respect to the trait being measured. This estimate is derived from the analysis of test scores and possibly other relevant data from a sample drawn from the population.

Application:
- Education is a profeesional fields with multiple problems. Techers alawys focus on tech what and how to teach while neglect why and taught to what degree.

-As a teacher, the first of all is based on student-center, how much knowledge the student had learned and can use, the teacher have to know. when I finished a point by my taught, I alawys ask my students "do you understand" for get feedback.

-As a administrator, implement standads-based education reform.Students should be tested against a fixed yardstick, rather than against each other or sorted into a mathematical bell curve.

this week we have learned norm reference system and criteria-reference system.after i learned it ,I think they're different ways to test the students performance.
application:
1.If I want to know how the student's performance in the class or compare with some one ,i will use the norm reference test.
2. If I want to know how the student's performance compare before, I will use criteria reference test.
3. but as a teacher we can't judge a student by a single standar.

Week 11,we talk about standards-based learning .there are 2 points impressive for me .
1,what is standards of leaning ?
There is without a precise definitions learning standard, and not an exact standard for our reference.
tandard is elastic, diversified. even same level students ,they need get different standard ,
2,how can improve standards-based learning ?
Accord with the needs of the students. Learner must be centre of learning .

Application :
1, setting flexible standards for students .because every student’s component not same .as a teacher ,don’t assessment students just use one standard. that’s not fair .some students are good at this subject ,some students are good at that subject .some students IQ very high ,and someone low,
and attitude play important role in process of learning .so ,as a teacher ,when we setting standard for student ,we need to concern students’ situation ,and try our best to help students achieve their goal ,reach the standard.

2,students must be center of learning .at first ,we must be understanding students’ need .this is the most basic of teaching-learning .assessment standard need include student self standard ,parents’ standards, teacher’s standards, school’s standards .but totally ,setting students’ need as centre of learning must be keep .

This week Dr.Andy discuss the Standard-Based learning model, norm reference system and criteria referenced system. The difference between norm and criteria are norm will compare with other but criteria will focus on the performance. I think the competition will be the main of the standard. I mean many schools try to make high standard that make schools to be famous. So what is in the competition ? In my opinion, it is a business for education.

1. I will measure students by doing some activities and different activities in different ages. For example, recreation for kindergarten and giving a question like case study for teenager.

2. I will focus on the measurement how to get along well with other. If people can get along well with everyone, they can survive for our world.

3. The assessment is not only occur in the class. It can be outside the class. Some students may not good in the examination but they have a reasons like they have to help their parent doing a job.

Standard-based education is something I’ve heard of before, but never get into detail reading or had a discussion about it; so I’ve learned a lot from the class. One good thing about the standard-based education is that everyone is working towards the same goal that people will be cooperating with each other to achieve that goal. However all of us are different individual with unique learning styles that educational goal for students will not be the same. As Dr. Andy gave the example that all students will be on level reading by third grade is a bit challenging task for teachers who are teaching students with reading disability. But at the same time the same goal is not applicable for gifted and talented students. One thing I learned from the discussion from standard-based education is believing in the students that ALL students can reach the goal with the effort from the students in addition to the teacher facilitating the students to use their potential. Nowadays in our school systems students who need the most often get the least as we discussed about that norm-referenced education system in the class.
Three applications
1) I will use assessment as a tool to help the needs of the students not to jump to the conclusion of the ability of student.
2) I will believe that ALL students can learn. But it doesn’t mean that all the students will do well on exams.
3) I will collaborate with my colleagues and parents towards the same goal which is for the students’ learning.

Standard based learning

The first time when I heard the word standard I might question that who created the standard or where this standard come from but I always forget to ask question that why we need standard. In this class can give me the clear picture about the objective of standard based learning. We should have the standard to measure that how much we achieve the goal of learning and teaching. The most challenging for using standard to measure the learner is how can we created the standard to deal with the average performance of learner not too difficult and not too easy for them. That might be effect to the learner who can’t achieve it.
The thing that teachers should concern more about standard is the standard should not created the environment of competition among the learner even the competition might have some advantage for them. But sometime it might be confuse about the learners’ perception between the ability of student according to standard and the real ability of human. Some students who fail from the standard it doesn’t mean that they have low ability in the social. They all have potential but it’s up to them that they want to use it or not and how the teacher can encourage them to show it.
The question is how the teachers can encourage them to achieve the learning goal. The teacher should concern more about the appropriate process and method to help the students who fail from the standard. This is the challenge mission of the teacher according to the word that “No child left behind” will we committed to do it or not?
Application
1. Study the variety of standard based that use in many countries for develop the appropriate standard with our students. Trial and apply with our student to created the best standard for our learner by concerning that the standard should deal with the average learner’s ability.
2. Create the appropriate process and method to encourage the student who can’t achieve the average standard. Discuss with the teacher to find the several approach to enhance the student’s ability.
3. Deliver the idea of “Everyone can do” to the teacher and remind them to concern more about the important role of teacher to give the full contribution to all student and the equity in teaching.

Our last class was about standard based learning. We discussed advantages of such approach and compared it to what is being done in lots of school still today.

With SBL all the students have a chance to "get there". There are no, like David said, winners and losers. All the students have the chance to to succeed. If they actually do is another issue, they however all have the opportunity to do it.

Applications:
1. As a teacher I should take the approach that all the students are capable to achieve what I want them to achieve.
2. As a teacher, I should make sure I give all the students every possible opportunity to achieve the goal. I should do all I can to help them be successful.
3. It might be tempting to make the content (goal) easier, so everyone can complete it. As a teacher, I should understand that this is not a solution. I should challenge the students, yet give them help so they can complete the challenges.

As some of you have correctly commented, just because in Standards based learning we can set it up so every child can succeed, this does not mean that every child will always succeed. There is always an element of choice involved, and some kids do choose to fail no matter how much support you give them. We need to bear this in mind and try not to beat ourselves up psychologically on occasion when a student like this comes our way. However, this should be rare, and we need to guard against assuming that failure is always because of the student. In the vast majority of cases, there are things we can do as educators to help move a child forward. And, regardless of behavior, we should never give up on a kid. We never know when a child will come in to class ready to learn, no matter what may have happened in the past. Dr. Andy

Week 11 was another interesting lecture that made me gain more insight into my teaching methods. As I am relatively new to teaching, I was not aware that I was employing a standards-based teaching approach rather than a norm-referenced one.

Some of the applications of concepts discussed are as follows:

1) I should continue to use a standards-based teaching approach, however I should not neglect the value of norm-referenced assessment when it comes to choosing the best candidate for a position.

2) As I staunchly believe that today's education systems still don't cater for multiple intelligences, I should not reject social promotion; however I should be careful not to overutilize it.

3) I believe that the normal distribution curve is a product of evolution, with favorable and unfavorable mutations making up the opposite ends of it. I should never forget that I will always have students in all ranges in my school and try my best to assist all groups of students, but mainly the ones in the middle.

last week we learned about the standard based education which means that students should be able to do specific task when they reached to defined level. It can help us to find out the ways to live together. For example, if there is 100 students in grade one, all of them will reach the goal at last. we also learned about the criteria based education and norm referenced as well.
Application
1. when we plan before teaching, we can start with our goal what we want the students to be able to do after particular level.
2. teach the students to learn in cooperative way to get some opportunity
3. when we teach in the school, we can cooperate with other colleague to share what we have to reach our goal which is to give the knowledge to the students, we don’t need to compete each other.

Unknown said...

Last class discussion was about the standards base learning and norm referenced assessment. In standard base it is determine whether students can meet the standard on the skill required to reach on the certain level where as norm reference assessment is designed to measure and compare individual students performance . This is an individual test result in which students with the best performance on a given assessment are given the highest grade. Now the most of the educational system however they use standards base learning but still they also use norm referenced assessment. For example at first to evaluate students, to know their strength and weakness norm referenced assessment has to be done. Somehow they both are interconnected.

Application

1. As a teacher we always have to support students to reach to standards. Those who are week in any area, we can arrange additional classes like support class, or after school class etc.

2. As a teacher we should always teach them to learn in the cooperative environment rather then competitive environment.

3. We always have to trust in students, we have to think that students can get to the standards through the effort.

From the week of standard-based education discussion, I have come to know more about how important criteria is necessary to refer appropriately when try to find out the needs of learners and teachers as well. Therefore, competition does not highlight people ability but cooperation is. But still to be argue that all are not really in the same levels of goal.

applications
-try to synthesize the appropriate references.
-create cooperating learning style
-meanwhile, observe how competition or standardization could influence for the present care.

From week 11, I learned about Norm-referenced test and standard based test.Norm-referenced test, there is certain point for students to pass. For example, if 60 marks is pass mark and students who don't get that mark are fail. Standard-based is different. Every thing come from students needs and concerns. Teachers need to teach skills to students what they needs and concerns.
Applications
1.Teachers need to observe every students carefully to know what they needs and concerns
2.Teacher should believe his/her students that they can do their best and encourage then to do their best.

we discussed two different types of tests named standardized test and standard-based test on last wednesday night. Both tests have their own unique medthod in a particular field. However, I agree with one researcher Grant Wiggans who stated that performance test is better and more appropriate in the educational reform that emphasizes on higher critical thinking level, constructivist and social constructivist learning.

Applications:
1. As an extraordinary administrator, I will create performance test rather than standardized test or standard-based test in my school.
2. As a prominent administrator, I will train my teachers to be effective constructivists for their students.
3. As an inspired administrator, I will persuade my teachers to improve their students' critical thinking skill.

Every country has their own local tests but there are uniform tests which actually compare students with one standard and entry to organizations internationally becomes much easier.

1)Having a standards based exam is good however I'm sure there are some students who are not able to come up to the standard for those specific subjects and are marked as failures even though they might have talent in other areas. Nowadays also when companies recruit employees before they had a standard that this employee should have this specific degree and then only they can work there. But since having a simple degree is not enough now companies look for creativity, personality etc as well A good example could be Google Inc.

2)The No Child Left Behind's a good application and I think they should enforce something similar in Asian countries as well. In India they have national exams when students are grade 10-12, which I think it would be better if there are exams before that also.

3)I think its important for teachers to be encouraging to their students even if students fail in tests. The teachers should portray and teach the can do and persist image rather than You failed and your life is going to be horrible.

Week eleven was about Standards-Based learning. The Standards-Based learning model describes the learners at the main point; the alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment are the needs and strengths of learners. The next three components of the system intended to support teacher while they work with students in the classroom; they are data analysis and planning, professional development and leadership and supervision. The last ring identifies the three component; resources, policies and communication must be aligned with all learners’ needs, socioeconomic status, race gender, and culture. Dr. Andy also told about norm-referenced tests, used to compare student performance to that of other students; and criterion-referenced tests, used to measure student performance against a defined set of learning requirements or expectations and can assess whether a student has attained a level of achievement term “proficient” or reach a certain percentage level.
- I would apply different kinds of standardized tests to different levels in which students’ skill, knowledge and the level of achievement.
- I would encourage cooperative learning in class that will help to align up the space of their knowledge.
- I would make sure that cooperation should be not fixed up with competition among students.

Telling you the truth, test isn't by strong point. Students in general do not like test, but it is an instrument to measure what they know and what they need to work on. This week we have talked about Standardized test. This test is like DRA at my school. It helps to see their skill performance.

Applications:
1. Testing score is what parents wanted to see. It's very sensitive. I need to be careful how to explain to parents.
2. I believe that testing only measure for some abilities, but not the kinesthetic students. I need to do some alternative activity for them as well.
3. I use more performance assessment like: observations, anecdotes, and checklist instead.

Please be aware that standards based instruction and standardized tests are not the same thing. Let's talk about this if you anyone is still unclear. There are some important distinctions between the two. Somebody please raise this point in class for discussion if the difference is still not understood. Thanks!
