From this week’s reading and discussion, I have learned that we need to focus on the quality when we want to improve school curriculum. There are the foundation principles for achieving “total quality curriculum.” These principles are: focus on students, an emphasis on quality, and constancy of purpose and continuous improvement. Also, there are the core processes for achieving high-quality learning. The core processes include dynamic shared leadership, data-based problem solving and decision making, cooperation and team work, and systematic professional development. Also, in terms of curriculum development, teachers, who apply the curriculum in the classroom, need to be able to interact with the curriculum councils, principals, superintendent, and school board directly. Interaction should be allowed in both ways. Not only from top to down. The relationship of curriculum groups should be in a way that supports students and teachers the most.
3 applications
1) If I have an opportunity to be a part of revising curriculum at my school, I would like to think about my students first. How and what students will learn is the most important concern.
2) In curriculum development, cooperation and teamwork of different groups are very important. I would like to directly discuss with people who are involved in curriculum development, such as teachers, administrators, management staff, head of department, dean, etc. It is necessary that everyone can interact each other to reflect different people’s opinions in the curriculum.
3) When it comes to implementation of the curriculum, leaders should provide professional development for school administrators and teachers to support them so that they can make the most of the new curriculum.
I came from a business and marketing background where total quality management is a very important key to monitor the planning, process and outcome of a product. I had never thought that the idea of total quality management is also applicable and important in curriculum development as it is in the marketing world. Looking at the structure of education and business marketing, it is not hard to identify the similarities in the development process of both areas but I have to agree on that the outcome or the product for both areas is significantly different. The traditional 4 P of marketing is Product, Price, Place and Promotion. No offend to the current marketing 4 P, I have decided to conclude this week’s discussion and reading in 4 significant P of curriculum development - Product, People, Process, Plan. Product: educational outcome from the curriculum that will impact student’s life; People: every individual that is involve in the curriculum development process (students, teachers, principals, administrators, superintendent, curriculum development council, parents and etc); Process: the entire progress of curriculum development; Plan: the actual curriculum. Each P is actually interrelated to one another as communication between people, details of the curriculum planning and the fluency throughout the development process will have influence on how effective the end product of education can have impact in the life of students.
Therefore, my applications for this week will be:
(1) If I have the chance to be in the school administrator’s team, I will encourage all ways communication between those who are planning, implementing the curriculum plan as well as those who are expecting the outcome of the curriculum. This is the best and the most effective ways to identify the needs of the students and transforming those needs into effective and efficient curriculum.
(2) Be flexible and creative applying the curriculum and the expectations in classroom teaching. Basically, curriculums nowadays are developed through a top-down management structure where the voices of those who are implementing the curriculum are least heard. However, as teachers, we can still carry out the curriculum in a creative and life-appealing way helping students to relate knowledge with everyday life.
(3)Review and revise the curriculum and the actual classroom learning at least once a year so that adjustment and modifications can be done to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of curriculum development.
Week 12 Reflections- This week's reading was all about developing a quality curriculum. The lesson emphasizes on the importance of both process and product in the total quality education. -Total Quality Management by W.Edwards Deming is being used to reform schools. -The foundation principles mainly focuses on the learners. Teachers should monitor and keep an eye on every student. -Constancy of purpose: Dynamic shared leadership- distributing shared TQM/there's always somebody else to blame. -"use your own best judgment at all times"- high-level trust (backing somebody up, when there's a problem My Reflections: 1) The curriculum itself, should be able to establish a well-balanced criteria and analyze students' work to determine any weaknesses in instruction or curriculum This things are possible through proper channels, Ex.-gathering information from the teachers. 2) In the school, the academic director should be able to act as the facilitator to support the professional growth and needs of teachers. Seeing to it that peers work together and give feedback and acquire the new skills and knowledge required by the new curriculum. 3) There should be "free flow of communication" in the school systems when organizing and planning for curriculum work. Remember that process and product are very important to achieve total quality education. Thanks, Evangeline
This week’s discussion was on Curriculum development. Dr Andy emphasized the importance of Total Quality Management (TQM), that it should run all through the system and that monitoring should be done carefully so that it does not end up as a micro-management issue. We talked about fundamental principles and core processes in curriculum development such as dynamic shared leadership. Dynamic shared leadership style is a powerful tool for shaping attitudes towards responsibility, this is from personal experience. My high school’s motto was, I hope still is, “use common sense”. Any time a student is on the wrong he would be asked only one question, “Did you use common sense when you were doing this?” This question had a profound effect on the character of the students
Applications 1. AS a teacher, if I ever get involved in the process of curriculum development, I will endeavour to bring all the stake holders on board, especially the final consumers of the curriculum – students. 2. If in a total quality management situation (if it ever arises), I will do my best to execute my duties without necessarily being followed around. 3. I will try to enforce total quality management in my classrooms.
Week 12 Reflections The past weeks topic was on total quality management of the curriculum, specifying how teachers, principals, school boards, education councils, and even curriculum developers should interact with each other in providing the best education for students. What especially stuck out to me was the diagram that was presented in the reading about how the relationships between the education council all the way to the teachers was from the top down and how curriculum developers were kind of on the side, often times interacting between two parties on that chain. I remembered that a lot of people in class- even me- were perplexed by this and wondered why the chain of command was only from the top down, and also why were the curriculum developers on the side jutting in. In the light of mentioning this, I would also like to point out the story Dr.Andy shared about the time he worked in South Korea. In the school he worked at, he mentioned that everyone knew what their specific task were in running the school and that Mrs.Lee had complete trust in her employees. It’s a very different picture to what the diagram previously pointed out. I guess the thing you can say about it is that in the school in South Korea every trusted each other to do their job and Mrs.Lee had to have complete confidence in her people. If you can picture it as a diagram, it’s like a clusters of individuals with tasks that are all connected to each other, unlike the previous diagram where it’s one straight line and the command comes from the top down. Now some people had mentioned that this would totally not work novice teacher, which I agree with being a novice teacher myself. I would soil myself if I had to take care of running the attendance of 500 students (maybe I’m overeacting?). More so, I think there needs to be a balance between the two models (a group where everyone trusts each other to do their job and the group were command comes from the top down). This is because I feel that new teachers should be given a chance to work in various schools to increase their experience and skills. With the command from the top down, I feel that it gives some direction for new teachers. I think that it gives them something to cling on to. However, I also feel that administrators and principals should also give room to new teachers to voice out their ideas and opinions about curriculum. Otherwise, where is the room for growth if you’re not allowed to make mistakes. Then again, there needs to be trust on both sides. The teachers need to be able to trust administrators enough to believe they are giving the right directions, and administrators also need to trust teachers enough to let them try things.
My first application is this, as a new teacher I should trust my school’s system of working and administrators direction. However, I should seek ways to make things better for the students and I’m in charge of try suggest ways of doing so to my head teachers. The school should have some trust in me, so I’d better make sure whatever would better the quality of the school. Furthermore, I should trust the school enough to be open to their comments and criticisms. Secondly, I would think that teachers should work together to provide quality education for students. I think a good way of looking at it is Jean’s four P’s of curriculum development: product (education), people (educators), process (creating curriculum), plan (the curriculum itself). I think teachers and administrators should do this together, even team teachers in their own classrooms. My applications for this would be to see myself as an important member of my school’s teaching community, to voice out concerns or opinions about what might be best for the class. Nice one Jean! Lastly, I think that to have a great education system educators always have to put student needs first and work their way back. As educators this must always be our focus. It should be the reason why we do this course. I like the way the diagram was shown in class with the reverse triangle. It was the students on top, then the teachers, principals, central office, and the educational superintendent. We have to serve each other the students best interest in mind. Thanks for the time! -Micah
12 week , topic was discussed is total quality curriculum . total quality ,include good idea ,mach to object , practice in processing of teaching –learning , perfect evaluation system ……. We value good idea ,no matter who is owner . Quality curriculum focus on students, emphasis on quality, and constancy of purpose and continuous improvement. Development quality need to mutual cooperation with curriculum councils, teachers ,schools ,parents ,students .
Application : if I can work for curriculum councils in school , when we make curriculum we put students on the top . our school’s curriculum stresses on the main concept of educating a whole child with the using of cross-curricular themes: individual growth, identity, social skills, communication skills, responsible citizen, and well-being.
And when our school curriculum just provides common guidelines, which school have to implement by adopting it accordingly to how they see suitable for the pupils in their region or school. Evaluation system is flexible ,we support national assessment and local office’s evaluation , but in school ,we encourages more of self-evaluation. Another point : our school curriculum ,we believe .believe teacher can do well ,and we believe students can achieve goals .teacher and students believe we can offer quality curriculum .
My ReflectionAfter reading and discussion, developing a quality curriculum is very challenging to me. Developing a qualitycurriculum needs to attain several resources; such as, state frame works, major national curriculum projects, therecommendations of experts and the recommendations of classroom for getting a total quality curriculum. Thecurriculum foundation principles are (a) A focus on student learning, (b) An emphasis on quality, and (c)Constancy of purpose and continuous improvement. The crucial resources for achieving high-quality learning are(1) Dynamic shared leadership; district leaders, principal, teacher and student bring successful implementation ofcurriculum, (2) Data-based problem solving and decision making; leadership make major decisions using aproblem –solving approach and emphasize data-based problem solving for student, (3) Cooperation andteamwork; emphasizes the value of cooperation and teamwork, and (4) systematic professional development.- If I am a member of school board in curriculum revising in my school in Myanmar, I must know what my expectation on this curriculum is, how it can help students to use in their daily life, and whether it will produce academic achievement in education. The quality curriculum must be accordance with current education system and students’ expectation. And then, it is needed to align with the culture background of state too.-asking recommendations from experts; and cooperating with all groups and give one another feedback and examine the new skills and knowledge required by the quality curriculum.-since the relationship of curriculum groups is downward communication, I would prefer that if they interact each others; such as, use upward communication, school meeting with all curriculum groups, and open door policy that encourages all groups to walk in and talk to school board, administrators, etc.Hnin Ei Ei PhyuID.5229612
Application 1. when we develop the curriculum, all the teachers should involve in it and think and create the right one for the students so that it will be more workable and could achieve the goal. 2. After school year, we need to evaluate our curriculum whether it is really suit with our students in this changing environment. 3. when we teach the students according to the curriculum, all the teachers should collaborate each other to fulfill the goal.
1-If I was in a curriculum writer’s team, I’ll focus on the students’ interest and based on their interests and plan my curriculum qualified. I will look both for the students and the quality of the curriculum. 2-I will give priority to teachers in developing the curriculum because they are using the curriculum practically and know very well how it works or not. Therefore, I will let the teachers and the curriculum planning council talks directly. 3-After writing and using the curriculum for the school year, I will ask feedbacks from the students how much they learnt from the curriculum, how they see or think about the curriculum and also the opinions of the teachers so that we can revise and rewrite better curriculum for next school year.
From this class I learn about the total quality management that apply from the business development tools to use in education. That can use to control the standard of education. We discussed about the quality management of curriculum that we thought that it should be more interact among the operation level and the policy level. That the feedback from the operation teacher is really important and the curriculum should be more practical for the teacher and up to date. Because of the different among culture, social, nationality in the community that required the appropriate factors to created the quality curriculum. Application 1. I will ask the teacher to making a research to survey the community’s expectation to the school and also the student’s expectation to know their demand and discuss about how to provide the curriculum for them. 2. I will organized the teacher meeting once a semester to ask the feedback after about curriculum and what should be improve.
Curriculum as an important part occur overall instruction process, it required instructor use the curriculum as a standard principle, associate with teaching skill or technologies, improve teaching quality thus achieved study outcome intended. The foundation principles of curriculum provide a basis for the en tire improvement effort and establish general guidelines for achieving total quality curriculum, follow as: 1. A focus on student learning 2. An emphasis on quality 3. Constancy of purpose and continuous improvement. The core processes are the essential tools for achieving high-quality learning.1)Dynamic shared leadership,2)data-based problem solving and decision making,3)cooperation and teamwork,4)systematic professional development.
Application: - The subject which in I teach as an elective course in my school. The students can choice the subject based on their interested. So, as a teacher I have to design the curriculum according to students' level and interesting direction.
- certainly, I cannot establish entire curriculum, we have team. We distributed to 3 parts. The first, one of part responsibility for design framework, the second responsibility for add the content, and finally, it responsibility for revise. Even though distribution but we also help each other as possible as can.
- A quality curriculum must be developing during instruction process. Based on initial curriculum designed, I improvement content or teaching method during instruction process, make the study outcome going to achievement.
Week 12 reflection is about the curriculum that the most important thing in the school. Curriculum is the thing that we must discuss and decide together how to make the best for students. Teachers , School administrator and co-oridinator work together from the foundations to get the best quality curriculum. So, my application for the curriculum process is like that
1) I will try to discuss with my subject teacher and school administrator to get the idea like how to develop the curriculum for thai students
2) I will try to analyse and make a report myself that is this curriculum is really work or not in this school and believe I can get benefits from an school curriculum
analysis.
3) After We agree to develop a new curriculum , I will try to call the teacher's and co-ordinators meeting once a month to discuss what we get the Pros and Cons from
Last week, Topic was about developing a quality curriculum. It is specific lesson how curriculum work in effective way. -Use your own best judgment at all times and highly trust people. -Good idea doesn’t matter where is come from. -Need to know how to bend the rule. -Essential framework from Dr. Andy. -Shared leadership, Shared task /not to blame.
My application Before curriculum will be presented to students, all member should have meeting voting right in order to develop curriculum of excellence. I discussed with my friend and we think that it is better to have a curriculum that overlaps between grade levels instead of gaps in learning concepts and ideas. I think quality curriculum need to check that there is sufficient coverage and whether all subjects are represented.
When a school wanted to improve a "Total Quality Curriculum," the whole community need to get involve, even the janitors. I agree with the author,Allan Glatthorn, that it needs to follow through a systematic like that of a business management. A top down system, I don't think will have all representatives and voices heard, including parents, students, and also the community at large as well. It's true about total involvement needed because I was also at the school in the State during the time they start going through this process.
Applications: 1. Open communication is what needed. I will also treasure this idea and listen to others ideas as well. 2. Thinking about my classroom, there are time that my students have given suggestions to improve the quality, I am willing to listen and respond. 3. Total Involvement is what I've learned by stepping up to take charge of tasks.
This week reading was quality curriculum. The quality process and quality products are important to improve the school curriculum process. I learned that 1. a focus on student learning, 2. an emphasis on quality and 3. constancy of purpose and continuous improvement are general foundation principles for achieving total quality. In Fig 2.1 the arrows are only one side up to down. So we discussed in the class that curriculum groups need to have two way flow connections. They need to connect each other to make best quality curriculum. Application 1. If i work in curriculum council I will focus on students first. 2. If i am in school board, i will make sure all of the teams are involve in making curriculum development. thanks, K.Hkawn San Mai

best for students. Teachers , School administrator and co-oridinator work together from the foundations to get the best quality curriculum.
So, my application for the curriculum process is like that
1) I will try to discuss with my subject teacher and school administrator to get the idea like how to develop the curriculum for thai students
2) I will try to analyse and make a report myself that is this curriculum is really work or not in this school and believe I can get benefits from an school curriculum
analysis.
3) After We agree to develop a new curriculum , I will try to call the teacher's and co-ordinators meeting once a month to discuss what we get the Pros and Cons from
new curriculum.
Thanks,

Last week, Topic was about developing a quality curriculum. It is specific lesson how curriculum work in effective way.
-Use your own best judgment at all times and highly trust people.
-Good idea doesn’t matter where is come from.
-Need to know how to bend the rule.
-Essential framework from Dr. Andy.
-Shared leadership, Shared task /not to blame.
My application
Before curriculum will be presented to students, all member should have meeting voting right in order to develop curriculum of excellence. I discussed with my friend and we think that it is better to have a curriculum that overlaps between grade levels instead of gaps in learning concepts and ideas.
I think quality curriculum need to check that there is sufficient coverage and whether all subjects are represented.
Thank you

When a school wanted to improve a "Total Quality Curriculum," the whole community need to get involve, even the janitors. I agree with the author,Allan Glatthorn, that it needs to follow through a systematic like that of a business management. A top down system, I don't think will have all representatives and voices heard, including parents, students, and also the community at large as well. It's true about total involvement needed because I was also at the school in the State during the time they start going through this process.
Applications:
Application
1. If i work in curriculum council I will focus on students first.
2. If i am in school board, i will make sure all of the teams are involve in making curriculum development.
