Thank you everyone for sharing your valuable comments and reflections about education on this foundation blog. As a classmate and educator, I valued this kind of learning very much --collaborative learning. I learned not only from the readings, lectures, reflections, but also from all of you that post your reflections and comments each week. We have journeyed together for three months in the course; we have shared our thoughts, feelings, and concerns of how we could make a difference in our students or your future role of leadership. We are all in it together, sharing the one common language of education that is, the love of teaching and learning and of finding ways to reach out to help our students, making our world and our class a happy place to live. As for what we did last class meeting in the groups discussion on 6 important characteristics of educational leadership: (1) the presence, (2)physical environment, (3)Leadership, (4)MEWA, (5) Vision and Mission, and (6) Ethnic in the school setting. I envision a healthy leader bear much fruits like that of the work of the human body. When all parts of the body works together in a healthy manner,Though many parts, just one body. A healthy, functioning body applications: 1. In the classroom, I need to develop that healthy leadership skills that are well-functioning. that means a one that can oversee everything what's going on inside the class, outside of the class, prevent things from happening. I will try to make it a happy place for the children to be in it. 2. I will teach my students to take on the leadership role in class by giving them tasks and responsibilities in class so that they will take the ownership and feel happy to be part of a functioning classroom. 3. In my own community, I have some role of leadership. I need to do my part well so that the whole house in good functioning. Involve everyone in my decision making. For example, I have the responsibilities of shopping for things at the house and making menus, I allow others to make suggestions of what they want to eat that is good for their health; then I will buy for them. When the head go through smoothly, the whole body will go in as well.
1-In the reading of school leadership, the principal is checking his school by MBWA. Not only the principal, as for an administrator, we can use this MBWA also. Managing by walking around is a very useful method in communicating with others and the best way we can approach our working society. For an administrator, instead of sitting behind the desk, we need to stand up and walk around the school campus not in a formal way but only for the purpose of observation for the school’s daily routine and to create a warm relationship with the other staffs or students. 2-I was agreed to the book that students are more important than the disciplines. Students may make mistakes and they would love to break rules. But only punishing cannot make them acting nice. We should be thinking of students how we can make them obey to the disciplines in setting the rules, regulations and disciplines. We have to let them know that these rules, regulations and disciplines were set for their own goods. 3-Let the students takes the role of leadership. By giving them this opportunity, they can see clearly and feel the difficulties, stressed and importance of the role. They will empathize on the leaders and be more obedient and corporate with them when they came to know and get the leader attitude inside of them.
Well....this week , we had a discussion about the leadership difference and we devided group as these characteristics (1) the presence, (2)physical environment, (3)Leadership, (4)MEWA, (5) Vision and Mission, and (6) Ethic. Each group presented what is the best way to improve the school using leadership skills and my group discussed and presented about No.(1) Presence. As I tried to find out the facts for our topic , I realized that all the characteristics are well-connected and it's all important.
Application: 1) First , I understand as the Philosophy is the way to change the school. We may have different philosophy but we must know that way to use the best for students. In this book ,Boyden said " My philosophy- I can't express it really : I believe in boys , I believe in keeping them busy...etc". So , I would like to use the way of believing each other and it could be the best way to make the best understanding with students.
2). Everyone born with leadership skills. It's just need practice and to show and use this. I realized one student who has good leadership skills can make his class quiet without any teacher. Teachers need to give them a chance to prove themselves to show leadership skills and we really must appreciate to those kinds of students who want to show leadership skills.
3). I would also try to give a good environment to take the reponsibility themselves and also try to do activities together to understand basic ethics to make a good living in their future.
Week 14 readings is all about Excellence in School Leadership- Tom and Bob mentioned that the leaders' characterictics (companies- we can also say schools)are the following: simple, crisp, and with a clear vision, etc...In the school, I can say that a successful teacher leader motivates his/her students in such a way that they can put their hundred percent and get the work done for the achievement of his/her objectives. - Leaders with courage and vision do make a great difference in their institution, whereas weak leaders cannot exploit or they don't have any chance to discover the potential of their talented students and the saddest thing is that they can't contribute in the teaching and learning process of their students. Leaders should prove to be a good role model because students look up to them. They make a difference in the life of the students. Also, teachers with wide experience should mentor the new teachers- this is also part of good leadership Presence, physical environment, MBWA, vision and mission, ethics, are all part of the leadeship process. A good leader of schools (whether it's a private or a government school) must know his/her teachers, students, clerks, even the helpers. He must have a clear understanding of human nature such as needs, emotions, and motivation,so as to have a good relationship with them. They must frequently reflect to be able to know what's best for the students- which is the most important part of our existence as educators.
In the Philippines, students show early leadership skills, from Grade 1 up to 4th year high school. On the first day, teachers need to prepare agenda for the class,a part of that is meant for class officers. Each class should have a complete set of officers, from the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Business Manager, P.R.O., Sergeant-at-arms. Students are the ones who elect and vote for their candidates. After the election, teacher will explain their individual responsibilities in the class. Each of them has roles to play. For example: sergeant-at-arms, will take care of the discipline in the class, especially those who bully others. They have to report everything to the President of the class. Teachers and all the officers elected, meet once a week to talk about the problems, projects, or if there is a need to plan for activities in the school. It's so nice to see the students growing up in this kind of settings. They value themselves more and at an early stage of their life, they experience being good leaders.
uuupppsss...I forgot, they even elect their 'muse' and 'escort'..It's really fun for the students. You will see the smile on their faces. Even those who are just seated are cheering for their chosen candidates. I'm dreaming that we could also promote having "Class Officers" in our class... Have a blessed day!! Evangeline
Last week’s class discussion was really helpful, informative and thought provoking. I had never known in such details of the different study programs available for the International Schools today. To be honest, when I saw the topic of international education, I had other interpretation and expectation in mind. I thought that we would be discussing something like the importance of international education in today’s world or something related to this. However, when I read the readings, I found that it was actually a total different kind of story. It provided an overview of programs available for students (especially High School) in the international schools today and preparing them before entering the university or the world. At first, I did not fully understand how concerning these programs are to me as an elementary subject teachers but after the discussion I understood that I need to have knowledge about these programs because I am now working in an international schools where students are undergoing the process of completing some of these courses and programs. It connected me with the students in a fairly good way when I started to ask them about the subjects or courses that they are doing and some of them are actually struggling in the progress of completing the A.P. programs; some of them are now deciding of whether to take up GED or continue Grade 11. One interesting fact that I had come to realization after this class is that never estimated any information shared that I personally felt that is boring or unrelated to me. This is because all these knowledge gained will make sense to me somewhere or sometime in my life that I would not even recognize.
The second part of the night, we had a great overview of educational leadership. Dr Andy opened the discussion by dividing it into 6 important areas in educational leadership: Presence, Physical Environment, Leadership, Vision and mission, Management by wandering around and Ethics. All these 6 areas are in fact very much interrelated and not one of it can be excluded from the list. However, I would like to conclude this discussion in a one summarize sentence. An effective and fine educational leader is a person that is dedicated to connect with people, to be involved with people, passionate about people and believe in other people. Everything that we had discussed that night was actually preparing us to be a more effective and efficient leaders in education. One of the important elements in education is people. It is a teaching-learning experience involving different individuals. It is a platform to equip and prepare an individual for the future and the world.
My application for this week will be:
(1) Never estimated the importance of any information being shared to me especially when it is related to education in the international schools. It is always helpful and help me to connect with the students more effectively.
(2) Be observative in class and around the school because it will help me to identify and to be aware of students’ potential, creativity and learning needs throughout the learning process. It will then enable me to provide substantial and appropriate assistance for them to learn better.
(3) The art of listening is another essential quality of a good leader. Therefore, I would learn to humble myself and listen to my students. Sometimes the giants in me are so gigantic that I sometimes ignored the voice of the students. Listening is one of the best ways to connect with people and to be involved with other people. Quick to listen and slow to talk, one big lesson to learn as a teacher and an adult.
Some great reflections here! Thanks for your comments, I will highlight Jean's words for your further consideration: "An effective and fine educational leader is a person that is dedicated to connect with people, to be involved with people, passionate about people and believe in other people. Everything that we had discussed that night was actually preparing us to be a more effective and efficient leaders in education. One of the important elements in education is people. I remember that last week we talked at the end of class about leadership. There were several groups made that highlighted key aspects of leadership. Some of the groups I can recall were management by walking around (mbwa), ethics, presence, and leadership which was the group I was in. I remember from that night that I joined the "leadership" group because I felt that covered all the other groups. Leadership in education means being present during class time, having influence on staff and students, having a high moral standard, and ultimately care for students. So the question now is how do I apply leadership qualities I may already possess and what steps must I take to be a better leader as a teacher in the classroom.
1. As a leader, the first thing I must recognize is that I am a servant to others. I should put others under my care first, may it be students or other co-workers. This includes having a heart and compassion for other people, a sense of intuition into motivating others.
2. Secondly as a leader, I would have to guide others to a common goal and create a sense of unity within the group. I remember from the reading that the school principal walked around the campus to check if every thing was alright. I think that gives a sense of unity by having others realize that we are actually working together for the common good of the students. Furthermore, unity is important being a teacher does not mean you are solo. You've got to work with others: collegues, parents, students. This career path is based on other people.
3. Lastly, as a leader I have to have a strong sense of self motivation and direction. I have to know what I want and how to get there. It has been said before that people without a vision perish, and I believe that is true with education. If our educational leaders do not have a clear sense of what we are building students to be, the results to could be harmful. Having clear realistic goals, even for a classroom setting, gives both the student and teachers motivation to move forward. As leaders and servants to others we must be focused on what goals are beneficial for the group and motivate them accordingly.
14th class ,we reading and discuss international education and school leadership . we were divided into 6 groups to discuss 6 key elements of school leadership ,these are : (1) Presence;(2) Physical Environment;(3) Leadership;(4) Vision and mission;(5) Management by wandering around;(6) Ethics. Our group responsible to “physical environment ”. key point of our group is :schools are kind of home ;schools should offer sense of belongings ;schools should create nurturing condition ;problems today is school lack of physical securing (raise school violence );business environment ,let students take leadership . application : 1,As school leader, should to know what is leader’s mission ,that is :students . How can achieve education goals ,how improve students’ quality ,how deal with problems of education ……and those all point have to give service to ultimate aim :students . 2,walk around in the school is necessary .walk around in the school not mean saunter, that mean as a leader need to observe and understand teachers’ teaching and students’ learning .the other side ,can strengthen relationship between teachers and leaders ,and between students and leaders . When walk around school ,can know what problems are exist ,and how to take action to deal with these problems . 3, strengthen communication .communication is the best way to got information and resolve problems .leader of school ,must strengthen communicate with teachers ,staffs even students . Trust every teacher ,trust students ,trust they can do they best .and help each other .as we know ,in Finland ,the most important culture is trust . administrator and parents trust teachers ,teachers trust each other ,and teachers trust students ,students trust teacher ….. So ,Finnish education is the top 1 in the world .
This week reading was about educational administration as a profession. I’ve got knowledge about school leadership. School leadership and management are obviously important. It’s talk about four principles and their school leadership styles. They believed that schools are not running for the faculty. School world is “for the kids” and they live “for the kids.” School leaders focused on achieving a sense of security in their school. They invest their time in school and students. They are not lazy to wonder around the school because they believe that the more people see them, students and faculty, the more smoothly their school will run. They see kids as emerging adults and treat as adults. Also excellent principals are tough disciplinarians. My applications 1. As a principal, I will go around the school and try to connect with students and find out their needs. 2. I will treat kids as adults. Let them know that they are part of something from school and the school expects something from them. 3. A principal need to be a tough disciplinarian. But need to be a broad minded and supportive person. thanks. K.Hkawn San Mai
Week 14 We shall attempt to take the framework and findings of A passion for Excellence and apply them to the school setting. We are admittedly taking a leap beyond our area of expertise, for 3 reasons: 1) School leadership and management are obviously important, and the subject of excellence in education is appropriately high on the national agenda. 2) We were struck as if by lightning by the traits shared by Boyden, Hogans, Mastruzzi, McCarthy, and, say, Ray Kroc, Willard Marriott, Frank Perdue, Tom Watson. 3) Stems from the fact that we have regularly been accused of merely rediscovering “common sense”----and the charge is true, because “common sense” has not been practiced much lately in most of today’s businesses. Teachers are typically cast in low positions in the school’s hierarchy and not treated with respectful regard. In the worst schools, teachers are demeaned and infantilized by administrators who view them as custodians, guardians, or uninspired technicians. In less grotesque settings teachers are left alone with little adult interaction and minimal attention is given to their needs for support, reward, and criticism. --------------Sara Lightfoot
Application: - As an administrator, should know teacher is intangible assets for school. How to attract and maintain qualified teacher as a required course for leader of school. As we know, it’s could affect teacher’s passion and job positive if the school couldn’t provide enough support to teacher. So administrator should satisfy and support teachers as possible as can. - As a teacher which a part of school system, they should support school implementation and reformation, offer effective feedback to line manager. - As school’s HR system includes line manager, HR professional and employee, namely, administrator, evaluator, and teachers. As HR professional in school should support administrator and teacher, provide effective suggestions to administrator and employees.
week 14 Last time, we had a disscussion the leadership difference and we talk about these characteristics. (1) the presence, (2)physical environment, (3)Leadership, (4)MEWA, (5) Vision and Mission, and (6) Ethic. I can remember "leadership" group. because each group Leadership in education means being present during class time. This is a includina a all.(administration, student, staff..and so on..) I want to be t a better leader as a teacher in the classroom. My application;; 1) As a teacher, I will find school and try to connect with students and their propose. 2) I'll try to give a good environment to take the reponsibility themselves and also try to do activities together to understand basic ethics to make a good living in their future. 3) If students have a good leadership skills, can make his class, environment, need to teacher,. so leadership is a all connected.
Last week, we learned different kind of leadership skills and it’s attributes. all leadership styles are related each other. Application 1. Teachers need to be approachable so that the students are able to reach us and ask if they have any confusion with their studies. 2. Teachers need to be empathetic the students for their backgrounds and their difficulties so that they will feel safe with us and make them motivate to go on their study. 3. Teachers need to observe on students to help them out. Different students are from different backgrounds and different level of understand on what we are teaching.

Week 14 Reflections
I remember that last week we talked at the end of class about leadership. There were several groups made that highlighted key aspects of leadership. Some of the groups I can recall were management by walking around (mbwa), ethics, presence, and leadership which was the group I was in.
I remember from that night that I joined the "leadership" group because I felt that covered all the other groups. Week 14
We shall attempt to take the framework and findings of A passion for Excellence and apply them to the school setting.
We are admittedly taking a leap beyond our area of expertise, for 3 reasons:
1) School leadership and management are obviously important, and the subject of excellence in education is appropriately high on the national agenda.
Application:
- As an administrator, should know teacher is intangible assets for school.
